“Standardisation” Is Raised as a Subject in Steel Industry by Myanmar Steel Association

Myanmar Steel Association (MSA) organised a seminar on “Towards the Sustainable Iron and Steel Industry in Myanmar: Opportunities and Challenges” on August 29 in Hilton Hotel, Nay Pyi Taw with the support and guidance of the Ministry of Industry.

Sit Taing Aung, Chairman of MSA said that “Steel consumption is one of the economy growth indexes to measure the development of a country. As the domestic steel consumption of 2.1 million tonnes in 2017 has increased to 2.4 million tonnes in 2018, the projection for our country’s steel market demand will rise to about three million tonnes by next year and continue to surge to about five million tonnes in 2025 with 8 percent of the annual growth rate. Standardisation is very important only with which it will assure the guarantee for the consumers, and create a level playing field for the local manufacturers. It will also prevent inconsistent quality import products from flocking into the local market from various countries, which will be a massive threat for safety when constructing infrastructure projects for the public to use.”

However, under the current circumstances, Myanmar relies heavily on imports rather than local production as only 10 percent of the consumption is produced locally and the rest 90 percent is imported. During the seminar, the first paper “A Technical Overview of Iron and Steel Making Processes Available for Myanmar” was submitted by Win Kyaw, a senior adviser of MSA and he discussed the pros and cons of steel making processes available for Myanmar, opportunities for local steel market, market overview of neighbouring countries etc.

The second paper “Strategic Environmental Assessment” was read by Maung Maung Than, Retired Director of Forest Department and he highlighted the benefits of SEA and how and why the SEA should be conducted to reduce the impact on society and environment. The third paper was thoroughly discussed by Xu Qungue, Engineer Professor of WISDEI Engineering and Research Inc. Ltd on the topic “Role of China’s Expertise in Regional Iron and Steel Development: An Overview”. Professor Dr. Kay Thi Lwin, Chairman of Myanmar Iron and Steel Industry Association (MISA) discussed on “Development of Myanmar Standards for Steel Products” and urged to set local steel standards.

Wave Money and Yoma Bank Team Up to Boost the Development of Wave Money’s Agents and Distributors

Wave Money, the leading provider of mobile financial services in Myanmar, has collaborated with Yoma Bank to boost the development of micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs). Through this collaboration, Yoma Bank provides unsecured, instant credit to Wave Money agents to help these agents operate their businesses more productively.

According to Ministry of MSME statistics, there are over 70,000 registered MSME enterprises across Myanmar. “MSMEs are key players in the country’s economic development. We believe that helping them scale is essential for boosting the country’s overall economic growth. We hope that this program will help grow not just these businesses, but the entire MSME sector and the broader economy,” said Brad Jones, CEO of Wave Money.“Yoma Bank initiated the ‘Smart Credit’ loan program for Wave Money agents in November 2018. Since then, we have witnessed strong demand for these loans, thanks to the fast and convenient application process, as well as the effectiveness of credit in helping the agents’ businesses grow, “Jones added.

Wave Money’s distributors and agents apply for the loan through Yoma Bank’s online application, and the loan is disbursed to the agent’s Yoma Bank account within one business day. The loan amount is based on the agents’ Wave Money transaction volume. The maximum eligible loan amount increases as agents conduct higher volumes of monthly transactions, and as they repay prior Yoma Bank loans on time. Since November 2018, over 50% of Wave Money’s distributors and over 20% of agents have taken a loan from Yoma Bank through this partnership.

“We collaborated with Wave Money as the first business partner for our Smart Credit program. We have been thrilled with the program’s success, having dispersed over 40 billion Kyats to over 8,000 Wave Agents since November 2018,” said Jason Loughnane, Yoma Bank’s Head of Digital Credit. Agents learn about the loan program through various channels – SMS messages, phone calls, and in-person visits from Wave Money employees. Agents must clear a low monthly hurdle of transaction volume to continue to remain eligible for a Yoma Bank loan, so inactive agents lose access to the credit program.

KBZPay Customers Can Now Pay YCDC Bills

KBZPay has developed a new feature for its customers which will ease out the various payments to Yangon City Development Committee (YCDC). This new function, now available in the latest version of the KBZPay app, was launched following a contract signing with YCDC on September 6, 2019 and with the support of Yangon Regional Government, making it the first mobile wallet in Myanmar to offer such payment services. KBZPay customers in Yangon can now make payments for land rental fees, land tax, goods tax, utilities, kitchen waste as well as commercial and hospital waste using their mobile wallet.

Soe Ko Ko, Head of Agent Banking, KBZPay, says, “KBZPay strives to empower people with access to everyday financial services and over the past year, we have seen more customers utilise their mobile wallets for quick and hassle-free bill payments. The new YCDC Bills function gives customers flexibility and the assurance of safe, secure payments for YCDC bills and adds to our QuickPay function which allows payments to over 90 companies, organisations and universities. With billing and payment among YCDC’s most frequent and important touchpoints, we are glad to support them with the improvement of the customer experience.”

As YCDC bills are regular payment requirements for landowners, households and companies, KBZPay has now made the payment process faster, smarter and simpler. YCDC’s collaboration with KBZPay reflects their recognition of cashless payment as the way forward to streamline operations, improve efficiency and more importantly, to increase the volume of bill payment collections. The launch of the YCDC Bills function to support YCDC bill payments comes after guidelines were released in June by the Advanced Education Department of the Ministry of Education, advising universities and colleges to accept payments of school fees using KBZPay. In recent months, KBZPay has also expanded the list of companies that payments can be made to including MMBusTicket, Fortune Broadband, BMF Microfinance, and iMyanmarHouse.com.

Myanmar Healthcare Sector Appeals to Private- Public Partnership

According to the interview of Dr. San San Yi, Chairman of Okkar Thiri with Oxford Business Group, the opportunities for investment in Myanmar’s health care sector in terms of public-private partnership are discussed as well as the improvements that have led to more patients being diagnosed and treated locally.

Dr. San San Yi told OBG that the number of private hospitals operating in Myanmar was on course to rise from single digits in the 1980s to 250 by 2020. “Foreign investors are rushing into the medical sector because this is the ‘sunrise’ sector,” she said, “and public-private partnership is the area to explore.”

The comments from Dr San San Yi come against a backdrop of renewed investor interest in Myanmar as the country continues to open up several areas of the economy to the outside world. Dr San San Yi explained that the arrival of key international names in the sector had generated important upgrades in the country’s private hospitals, with high-quality equipment, such as linear accelerators, now installed in Yangon and elsewhere in Myanmar. “The number of people who are going abroad to be treated or to get a diagnosis is becoming less and less every year because the facilities are improving in this country,” she said. Against this backdrop, doctors are returning from abroad, Dr San San Yi noted, which should help to reduce waiting times.

OBG remarks during an interview that “Dr. San San Yi highlights the need for more private hospitals and medical staff, while also reminding viewers of the country’s plans to launch a health insurance system for its citizens. Her observations will undoubtedly be of interest to investors eyeing the many opportunities in Myanmar’s health care sector.”
