Myanmar will host the 13th ASEM Foreign Ministers’ Meeting (ASEM FMM) on November 20 and 21 after it organised the ASEM Senior Officials’ Meeting (ASEM SOM) in Nay Pyi Taw from September 6 to 8.
The three-day ASEM SOM took place at Myanmar International Convention Centre I (MICC – I) in Nay Pyi Taw, being attended by representatives from 51 ASEM partner countries, the European Union, the ASEAN Secretariat and Asia-Europe Foundation to discuss the cooperation issues related to energy, trade and communications, and to negotiate for mutual interest by cooperating.
The first Central Committee Meeting to successfully host the 13th Foreign Ministers’ Meeting of ASEM, the AsiaEurope Meeting, was convened on May 22. The committee is led by State Counsellor and Foreign Minister Aung San Suu Kyi.
The Asia-Europe Meeting is an intergovernmental forum for dialogue and cooperation between Asia and Europe, currently comprising 53 partners – 30 European and 21 Asian countries, the European Union and the ASEAN Secretariat.
Established in 1996, ASEM fosters dialogue, reinforces cooperation, and promotes collaboration in political, economic, social, cultural, and educational areas for common interest, in a spirit of mutual respect and equal partnership.The 12th ASEM FMM was held in Luxembourg in 2015, and the 11th ASEM Summit was convened in Mongolia in 2016.
