Myanmar attempts to enter OGP Organization

Republic of Union of Myanmar pres- ident, U Thein Sein shaped Leading Committee and Working Committee to become a member of Open Gov- ernment Partnership (OGP), government newspapers reported on 12th November. Open Government Partnership or OGP is an international organization promoting multilateral initiative and seeking strong commitments from participating govern- ment institutions to promote transparency, increase civic participation, fight corrup- tion, and harness new technologies to make government more open, effective, and ac- countable.

The structures of committees aim to fulfill the needs of public with entire responsibili- ties and to develop inventions in technology while the government is concentrating on clean government and good governance in nation-building.

In seven-member leading committee, Chairman is Union Minister U Soe Thane from the President Office (3) and the Vice- chairman is Minister U Tin Naing Thein. The four members are Minister of informa- tion U Ye Htut, Minister of Finance U Win

Shein, Deputy Minister of Home Affairs Brig-Gen Kyaw Kyaw Tun, Deputy Minister of Communications and Information Tech- nology U Thaung Tin. The team’s secretary is Dr Kan Zaw, Minister for National Plan- ning and Economic Development (NPED). The chairman of working committee is Deputy Finance Minister Dr Maung Maung Thein and vice chaiman is Deputy Minister of NPED. The rest are Director-Generals of Home Affairs, Information, Communica- tion and Information, Finance, NPED and Union Attorney General’s office.

The committees’ tasks are identified by four objectives: to ensure Fiscal Transparency, to take over the role on public information, to fight against corruption and to realize a responsible government and to promote the cooperation of citizens in policy-making and administrative processes. Two commit- tees will form sub-committees, if needed. OGP was initiated in September 2011 by 8 founding countries, the United States, the United Kingdom, Mexico, Norway, the Phil- ippines, South Africa, Brazil and Indonesia, to provide an international platform for domestic reformers committed to making

their governments more open, accountable, and responsive to citizens.

In total, OGP participating countries have

made over 1,000 commitments to make their governments more open and accountable.
