According to the Kayin State Government, a border town between Myanmar and Thailand, Myawaddy, is going to have electricity within two years. Among of 12 towns in Kayin state, only 3 cities (Hpa-an, Hlaignbwe and Thandang) have electricity currently.
The residents of Myawaddy are currently forced to buy electricity from Mae Sot using private owned generators or solar power.
Thant Sin Aung, Member of Parliament for Kayin State, said as Myawaddy is border trade town the need for electricity is high, which is why they buy electricity from over the border. Moreover, the industrial zone of Myawaddy will be opened soon, increasing the need for power
