Myanmar Signs MoU with Thailand to Develop the Capital Market

The Securities Exchange Commission o f M y a n m a r ( S E C M ) s i g n e d a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Securities Exchange Commission of Thailand (SECT) to develop the fledging capital market of Myanmar on October 16 at SuleShangrila Hotel in Yangon.

Myanmar Deputy Minister for Planning and Finance Maung Maung Win, who is chair of the SECM, signed the MoU with Secretary General of the SECT Rapee Sucharitakul at the presence of the ceremony attendees including the SECM members, officials from Myanmar Insurance Enterprise, Myanmar Investment and Commercial Bank and Myanmar Economic Bank, and representatives from the Association of Thai Securities Companies, the Association of Investment Management Companies from Thailand, the Thai Listed Companies Association and local securities companies.

The MoU aims to contribute to development of the capital market in Myanmar through the sharing of SECT’s experience. The two sides agreed to cooperate to provide human resource development training in Myanmar and to strengthen capacity and supervision of the SECM.

A subsequent conference took place at the same hotel on October 17 to share experience from the capital market in Thailand.

In December 2015, Myanmar launched its first bourse, the Yangon Stock Exchange, and it started trading on March 25, 2016.
