Myanmar is ranked 170 out of 190 countries, moved up one place on the World Bank’s annual report in ease of doing business. The annual report of World Bank had released at the end of October. The report covered 10 areas; “starting a business”, “dealing with construction permits”, “getting electricity”, “registering property”,
“getting credit”, “protecting investors”, “paying taxes”, “trading across borders”, “enforcing contracts” and “resolving insolvency”. In the ranking, Myanmar has made substantial improvement in some area such as “starting a business”. For “starting a business” area, Myanmar jumps 24 places to 146th rank to compare with 2016 edition of doing business report.
On the contrary, there is slippage in other areas such as “trading across border” and “paying taxes”. For trading across border area, Myanmar drops 10 places to 149th rank to compare with the 2016 edition. World Bank remarked as making it more difficult to do business. Those factors prevented improvement on the rankings that is followed widely by global investors.
Singapore and Hong Kong are the two highest ranked countries in East Asia and Pacific region, at 2nd and 4th the both respectively and were ranked the world’s top ten for the ease of doing business. Thailand, Neighbouring country of Myanmar, was ranked 46th in the report.
