Gas Discovery in Myanmar Offshore

Australian oil and gas company Woodside’s Pyi Thit-1 Wildcat Well drilled in Block A-6 in the Southern Rakhine Basin has intersected a gross gas column of approximately 65miles.The latest development marks the company’s third gas discovery offshore in Myanmar. The Australian exploration firm has reported that about 36 metres of net gas pay interval has been discovered within the primary target sandstone reservoir.

The company said it is anot-her success story for an underdeveloped part of the world. Woodside last year increased its best estimate of the con-tingent reserve potential offshore Mya-nmar by 83 million barrels of oil equ-ivalent following the technical evalu -ation of two exploration wells drilled in the area. Woodside CEO Peter Cole-man said: “This result builds on our understanding of the potential resources in the Southern Rakhine basin and will further inform our consideration of development options.” The Woodside-operated Pyi Thit-1 well was drilled to a total depth of 4,570 metres, following which the company conducted wire line logging and confirmed the presence of a gas column by taking pressure measurements and gas sampling. A drill stem test was carried out across a 29m section of the reservoir and flowed at nearly 50mmscfd on a 44in / 64in choke for 44 hours indicating strong reservoir pressure support. Woodside Energy (Myanmar) owns 40% stake in Block A-6 and is its joint operator MPRL E&P is also the joint operator of Block A-6 with a 20% interest and the remaining 40% interest is held by Total E&P Myanmar. The latest gas discovery follows two previous discoveries made by Woodside last year. The Shwe Yee Htun-1 well also located in Block A-6 was announced on January 4, while the Thalin-1A well situated in Block AD-7 was announced on February 12 last year.
