March 30 – Federica Mogherini, EU High Representative/ Vice-President, congratulated the new President of Myanmar and made statement on the entry into office of the new Government of Myanmar. She said “Today’s peaceful transfer of power in Myanmar to a democratically elected Government marks a new important step in the consolidation of the country’s remarkable transition. It follows the victory of the National League for Democracy led by Aung San Suu Kyi during landmark elections in November 2015. I warmly congratulate the new President Htin Kyaw and the new Government of the Union of Myanmar.
While significant progress was made in the past few years, many challenges remain for Myanmar to become an inclusive, pluralistic and peaceful democracy. The EU remains strongly committed to accompanying the country and its people on this extraordinary journey. We look forward to working with the new Government and to supporting the Myanmar people along their path to democracy and socio-economic development for all”.
