US Pledges Millions of Dollars in Aid to Myanmar

The United States will provide Myanmar with additional assistance of $21 million to help boost the country’s economic growth and long-term development, said US deputy national security adviser Ben Rhodes.

The aid will give support to Myanmar’s development in four areas: tripling exports in five years, enhancing capacity building of civil servants, strengthening the legal system, and modernizing the agricultural sector.

Rhodes arrived in Myanmar mid-July for his fifth visit to the country. During the visit he highlighted the US commitment to further support Myanmar’s democracy consolidation, national reconciliation, and people-to-people contact between the Myanmar and the U.S.

“Myanmar people have sacrificed so much for change. Your success is in our interest. Our interest in Myanmar is for you to succeed. We are here to support that,” Rhodes said in a public talk held at the Yangon University.
