SCG introduced a new roadway initiative by installing directional signage on the streets of Mawlamyine in Mon State. The increase in traffic and motor accidents, SCG teamed up with the Mawlamyine City Development Committee (MCDC) and the Traffic Police Department to create a vast network of accessible and current signs that will ease traffic for Mawlamyine residents and visitors. The handover of the roadway signages by SCG took place at a ceremony held with government officials and invited guests on August 26 at the office of MCDC, Mawlamyine.
SCG has built over 500 traffic signs across the city of Mawlamyine, during past four months. The dual language directional sig- nage allows for smoother traffic flow and easier navigation. Safety signage has also been erected to educate motorists on important and potentially life-saving rules such as wearing a seatbelt and refraining from using a mobile phone while driving. H.E Dr. Toe Toe Aung, Ministry of Develop-
ment Affairs said, “The directional signage allows for smoother traffic flow and easier navigation, ultimately resulting in a decline of traffic related incidents. The safety signs serve another, if not more important service – they provide information about potential- ly life-saving rules, such as seatbelt usage. I hope this project will serve as a model for motorist education.”
According to the recent survey of motorist and pedestrians, conducted by SCG, the feedback on the initiative is mainly positive.
Mr. Sorasak Keeratichokichaikul, Government & Public Affairs Manager of SCG in Myanmar also added, “Over the last few years, with the increasing number of cars and deteriorating condition or lack of traffic signage, cities across Myanmar are experiencing more and more accidents. Together with local organizations, we can promote safety amongst motorists, cyclists and pe- destrians through education and since the signage has been installed, city officials have reported a decrease in motor accidents. Additionally, we are very pleased with how well-received the initiative is by the community.”
Apart from the roadway signages, SCG has consturcted three small traffic police stations at busy intersections in Mawlamyine near Thanlwin Bridge, Maung Ngan Traffic Light and B.E.H.S (7), Mawlamyine. Currently, SCG’s greenfield cement plant is under the construction at Mawlamyine and is expected to be operational in mid-2016.
SCG’s mainly businesses include SCG Ce- ment-Building Materials, SCG Chemicals, and SCG Paper. More than 200 companies and more than 54,000 employees are under its umbrella. SCG started its regional expan- sion to Myanmar over 20 years ago.
