SCG Grants 150 Scholarships to High School Students in Yangon Divisions

In an effort to help students realize and achieve their academic goals, the fifth annual ceremony named “Journey to Your Dreams” was held at Gandamar Hall in Yangon last month. SCG, ASEAN’s leading business conglomerate, hosted the event presented 150 high school students from the Yangon Divisions with scholarships to further their education.

The program honors students who have demonstrated gratitude towards their families, proactively contributed to their communities and exhibited good academic records. Compared to 2015, this year SCG has granted 100 more scholarships across Yangon and Mon State, with each scholar receiving K220,000 to cover school fees and school supplies for an academic year. The scholarship awards were handed out by H.E. U Myint Thaung, Planning and Finance Minister of Yangon Region; H.E. Mr. Pisanu Suvanajata, Ambassador of Thailand and Mr. Aree Chavalitcheewingul, Vice-President – Regional Business, SCG Cement-Building Materials.

Myint Thaung said, “As the government assesses the current state of Myanmar and its development, education has been pinpointed as a key area for advancement. As progress is made, and the economy grows, we must work together to prepare our youth to partake in a more competitive market. I would like to express my gratitude to the parties involved in this scholarship program which is a valuable nobel work.”

“Thailand and Myanmar share similar values, in our drive to help others and give back to society. We support initiatives such a SCG Sharing the Dream, as we encourage the Thai private sector to prioritize people and the local culture. The Royal Thai Embassy welcomes programs that connect the youth with continued education,” said Suvanajata. “Our support for Myanmar education doesn’t end here. We also run a SCG International Internship program, a month-long overseas internship in Thailand for University students in ASEAN,” said Aree Chavalitcheewingul.

SCG Sharing the Dream is a regional program that started in 2012 and has granted scholarships to students in ASEAN countries, including Myanmar, Indonesia, Vietnam, Philippines, Laos, Cambodia and Thailand, with the aim to improve the livelihoods of people around the region.
