President Calls for the Strengthened Judiciary

The new president Win Myint has urged the country’s judicial authorities to make strides to strengthen the judiciary with the help and support of organisations providing legal aid and rule of law centres.

The President made the call during his meeting with Union Chief Justice Htun Htun Oo and Supreme Court judges at the Presidential Palace in Nay Pyi Taw on April 10. The meeting shortly came after Win Myint’s election as the new president to succeed the former president Htin Kyaw who resigned with immediate effect on March 21.

Win Myint discussed the work that needs to be accomplished to consolidate the judiciary sector at the meeting, asking to conduct responsible management at all government levels. The president said that the country will achieve economic development only when there is rule of law and it is free from corruption. He noted that it was the responsibility of the Chief Justice to strengthen the entire judiciary sector and to properly guide judiciary offcials at the State and regional levels, continuously suggesting that skilled and truly capable persons must be assigned positions in the judiciary to bolster the sector.

Also present at the meeting were Deputy Minister for the President’s Offce Min Thu and Supreme Court judges Thar Htay, Mya Thein, Myint Aung, Aung Zaw Thein, Mya Han, Myo Tint, Soe Naing and Khin Maung Kyi.

Win Myint, who previously served as the Speaker of the PyithuHluttaw (House of Representatives) from 2016 to 2018, was voted the 10th president of Myanmar by the Presidential Electoral College on March 28, and sworn-in as president on March 30.
