Myanmar to Nominate Shwedagon Pagoda as World Cultural Heritage in 2020

According to state media reports, Myanmar is trying to nominate its landmark Shwedagon Pagoda to be included in World Cultural Heritage of UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 2020. Plan for the inscription of Shwedagon Pagoda is now being prepared by Ministry of Religious and Culture. Shwedagon Pagoda, usually crowded with devotees, both local and international, is the repository of many ancient architectures, sculptures and arts. Total of 300,000 tourists visited Shwedagon Pagoda in the first five months of this year according to the official statistics from Board of Trustees. The board figures show that Shwedagon Pagoda has 500,000 visitors from over 40 countries and regions annually.

Myanmar is also preparing for Bagan, the ancient city, situated in central Myanmar and Myauk-U archaeological area and monuments to be included in UNESCO World Heritage List. Pyu ancient cities was the first site inscribed to the list from Myanmar.
