Myanmar Panel Discussion in Bangkok

The latest investment opportunities emerging in Myanmar and the country’s critical partnership with Thailand were among the topics explored at a highprofile seminar, which took place on July 20 at the Shangri-La Bangkok. Titled “Myanmar Insight 2018”, the event was organized by the Thai Embassy and Thai Business Association of Myanmar (TBAM).

Among the VIP attendees were: Thaung Tun, Union Minister for the Office of the Union Government, Myanmar, who made a keynote speech; Pichet Durongkaveroj, Minister of Digital Economy and Society, Thailand; and Jukr Boon-Long, Thailand’s Ambassador to Myanmar. High-profile participants at the conference included: Khin Maung Cho, Union Minister for Industry, Myanmar; Aung Naing Oo, Secretary of the Myanmar Investment Commission; Ohn Maung, Union Minister for Hotels and Tourism, Myanmar; Mi Mi Khaing, Director General, Department of Electric Planning, Ministry of Electricity and Energy, Myanmar; Piya Sukhumpanumet, General Manager, PTTEP International (Yangon Branch); Watchara Hemruchatanun President, EGAT International; and Carl Crick, Group CFO, City Mart Holding.

Panelists debated a broad range of subjects, including the benefits of investing in Myanmar and doing trade there, together with the challenges that businesses can come across. The seminar also shone a spotlight on the country’s energy and retail industries, both of which are expected to play a key role in taking the economy to the next level, and untapped opportunities in the tourism sector. In addition, topical issues, such as food security, were on the agenda.
