Google launched its new project “Love your Language” on 28th February at Phandeeyar Inno-
vation Lab, inviting language experts and Myanmar translators to reduce the language barrier and to develop the Myanmar trans- lations online. This translate-a-thon event was introduced at the same time one of goo- gle products, Gmail came available in local Myanmar language. The program, hosted in cooperation with Myanmar Language Com- mission, was divided into two sessions. The recently available Google Translate was still in its first step, at the “alpha” stage where it helps the general understanding of the text. Google Translate is available for 90 lan- guages and Myanmar language has become available recently.
We’re working hard to make more of our products available in Myanmar language and to reduce the language barrier that Myanmar speakers face on the web” said Divon Lan, Google Product Manager, on the launch event. “One of the challenges we were having with Google translate Myanmar
language is currently the product is at what we call unfinished level which means transit translation is kind of ok but still the quality is not very good and what we want to do is we want to create community in Myanmar
people love Myanmar language and more Myanmar language is on Internet and work together to improve more quality of Google translate”, he explained.
At the same time, Google has made one of
its products Gmail available in Myanmar language which is optimized for UNICODE fonts. Google has officially launched google. com.mm in 2013 and Gmail is the fourth product to enter Myanmar since then.
