Vice President Talks with the Secretary General of BIMSTEC

Vice President Myint Swe held talks with Sumith Nakandala, the Secretary General of the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multisectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) at Presidential Palace in Nay Pyi Taw. The highlight of their discussion was boosting the mutual relation between BIMSTEC-member countries, to found the Free Trade Area within BIMSTEC region and to hold the meeting between Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa (BRICS) group and BIMSTEC at India in October, 2016.

State Counsellor Highlighted Myanmar Migrant Workers Issue in Thailand

State Counsellor Aung San Su Kyi held talks with Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha at the Government House of Thailand during her three day visit to the country in May. Su Kyi asked for legal status for migrant workers in an effort to combat human trafficking. Legal status in Thailand would also give migrant workers access to education and healthcare services. The creation of a telephone hotline was also discussed; the hotline will assist migrant workers in Thailand and operators will speak in Myanmar language. For education and healthcare sector each, 500 million Bahts have been allocated for all migrant workers. Afterwards, Su Kyi and Chan-o-cha attended the signing ceremony of Memorandum of Understanding on Labor Cooperation. This understanding allows the two governments to cooperate in skills development and employment. This agreement calls for more transparency of hiring migrant labor and grants the workers equal treatment under the law.

53rd Myanmar Gems Emporium

The 53rd Myanmar Gems Emporium is being held in the Mani Yadana Jade Hall at Nay Pyi Taw from June 24 to July 6. Vice President Henry Van Thio, Union Ministers Kyaw Swe and Ohn Maung attended the opening of the event. Myanmar has been holding the Annual Gem and Jade Emporium since 1964.
