Myanmar, China Sign MoU for Economic Cooperation Zone

Officials from Myanmar’s Ministry of Commerce and Ministry of Commerce of China signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish an Economic Cooperation Zone on the China-Myanmar border on May 16.

The establishment of cross-border economic cooperation zones with neighbouring countries can be supportive to the implementation of the Belt and Road initiative, which Chinese President Xi Jinping proposes to develop a strategic network of intercontinental trade routes, connecting countries in Asia and Europe. The signing of the MoU marks a milestone for China and Myanmar to implement a border economic cooperation zone. The zone is likely to be set up in the central and southern part of the China-Myanmar border, which is at a lower altitude and where the landscape is mostly flat, said Zhou Rong, a senior research fellow at the Chongyang Institute for Financial Studies at Renmin University of China.

In recent years, China has established several border economic cooperation zones with neighbouring countries, such as the China-Kazakhstan Khorgos International Center of Boundary Cooperation and the China-Laos Mohan-Boten Economic Cooperation Zone. “The zone is of great importance for maintaining peace and stability in the border region as it can boost employment and improve local people’s income, while also helping strengthen trade contacts,” Zhao Jianglin, an expert on Southeast Asia affairs at the National Institute of International Strategy under the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.
