Yangon Media Professionals, contents producer based on Yangon, succeeded in fundraising for a documentary film about the history of Burma occupied by Japan through crowd funding. 67 donors funded 867,000 Japanese Yen (about 10,000,000 kyats) in total for this project by the deadline of fundraising, November 24. This amount is more than our target, 840,000 Japanese Yen. Crowd funding is the system for fundraising and donation through the Internet.
Japanese crowd funding platform “CAMPFIRE” was used. A MyanmarJapan joint film “The Ancestors’ Memories” (tentative title) is the documentary in which three Japanese and Myanmar students made interview to the witness of Burma in World War II and think again the meaning of the history. The Director is Arata Shigeno, a Japanese student in Kyoto University, 22 years old, and also studying journalism in Yangon Media Professionals. Co-directors are Paing San, from West Yangon Technological University, 20 years old, and Kaung Gon Htin, from Dagon University, 20 years old. Both are from our joint production “De Art Films.”
Director Shigeno said “I am really happy to be supported by many people. I would like to tell the audience about the realities about the war that we knew through many interviews.” It is very rare in Myanmar for students to raise fund by crowdfunding for film production. Shigeno also shot another documentary film in Myanmar in September. His documentary film, “Welcome to Tsunami Village” about Dala area in Yangon is also to be sent to film festivals.
